One of the founder members of the J-League they also hold the distinction of being the longest top division club in Japan having not been relegated since arriving at the top in 1982. They gained the F in their name after Yokohama Flugels went bankrupt and merged with the club in 1999. It can’t have been a happy amalgamation and many Flugels fans went and formed Yokohama FC rather than support Marinos.
They have had success during their time in the top flight; winning the Championship 3 times and getting a victory in all 3 Cup competitions available for them to compete in.
They play in Japan’s biggest stadium and can attract some decent crowds gaining an average attendance of over 25000 and have used some of their gate receipts to bring Shunsuke Nakamura back to Japan and build their team around him.
Marinos means sailors in Spanish.
