One of the most successful clubs in Japanese club football they have won the J-League 3 times, been runners-up 3 times and won the Asian Champions league, but did it mostly about 10 years ago.
Since then they have been slowly sliding towards mid-table mediocrity but are still capable of beating anyone in the division on their day.
Not the best supported club in the division their supporters will be concerned by the rise of rivals S-pulse. Avispa have taken a couple of midfielders from them (Matsuura and Naruoka) for the 2011 season.
Their name means exultation in Spanish.
