Name : Makoto Tanaka 田中 誠

Position : Centre-back

DOB : 8 Aug 1975

Height : 1.78m

Weight : 76kg

Nickname : Mako

Tanaka was by far the most experienced, and most illustrious member of the Avispa squad having played over 350 games for Jubilo Iwata in the J-League, and 32 times for Japan. During his time at Jubilo he won numerous Championships and made the J-League best XI twice.

Getting a bit older he moved to Avispa in 2009 and when fit was an obvious first team choice. As a smaller defender who reads the game to take up good positions, rather than tear around the pitch his age doesn’t seem to be a problem and together with Daiki they made a very solid central defensive partnership.

He is composed and steady on the ball rather than dynamic, but he makes very few mistakes and the team look much better when he is playing.
Unfortunately he is quite small as a centre-back, and the defensive line struggles against tall strikers.

As the team got promoted to J1 time caught up with him a bit and he ended up getting destroyed on return to old club Jubilo and made his 40m yen salary start to look a little strong. Made the right decision to retire in 2011.

  1. He was so bad in 2009…
Now he really improved and get to his J1-days again!
I’m happy that the moved from a bad one into a very solid one again 🙂

  2. I don’t know if he was a fast/mobile defender when he was younger, maybe he has had to adjust his game a bit as he gets older.

He still isn’t as important as Daiki, and maybe too similar (both quite small for central defenders), but has done well this year in my opinion.

If Tanaka or Daiki got a long injury I’d be worried about who is available as back-up.
