Name : Tetsuya Okubo

Position : Striker

DOB : 9 Mar 1980

Height : 1.90m

Weight : 84kg

Nickname : Jumbo

Jumbo was the talisman for Avispa for 3 seasons and in 2008 and 2009 was a genuinely threatening striker at J2 level, scoring goals for the club when few other people were.

A huge favourite with the fans he had his own song and radio show, and was clearly very popular with his team-mates with his eccentric personality. Unfortunately the 2010 season wasn’t a good one for him and a loss of form mid-season saw him dropped from the starting XI for the first time in his Avispa career.

He is a one-dimensional striker getting most of his goals from his head playing in an obvious target man role, which in turn can make the team he plays for one-dimensional as they launch balls up to his head.

I wasn’t surprised that he was released at the end of 2010 after the lacklustre season he had just endured, but also knew that he would be able to get a new club very easily.
I was surprised that the club which ended up picking him up was a J1 club, Montedio Yamagata; and a expect him to struggle at that level.

  1. You are right about Jumbo.
He is the clown of the team and fans favourite, because he’s so funny and cool.
He keeeps but the good mood in the team.
Look at his singing skills, it’s just awsome 😀

  2. PS: Jumbo played in the PSM against Oita

    • Yeah, I changed my opinion of him a lot after seeing him on TV with Nakamachi.

Every team needs a player to build a good team spirit and if he is helping to do that then he is more useful than just what he does on the pitch.

Apparently he has a radio show which he presents some time.

    • Almost exactly 2 years ago in that video.

Okubo is already calling Kudo Grandpa!
