Avispa got a Christmas present today as experienced goal-keeper Yuichi Mizutani arrives from Kyoto Sanga.
He is a player who has been getting regular action at J1 and J2 teams since 2003, with well over 100 top league appearances and 80 in the last 2 seasons alone at Kyoto in J2.
At 32 years of age he is probably at about his peak as a goal-keeper, and you’d hope to still get another 5 years of first team football out of him.
He is returning to Avispa after spending 5 years here previously from 2001. I hope that means he has fond memories of the place, and is someone who is going to want the club to succeed as someone with an attachment to the club rather than just another player.
At 187cm he is a decent enough size for a keeper, and while he isn’t a keeper I have noticed much in the last few seasons that can sometimes be a good sign rather than a bad sign with keepers.
Welcome to the club Yoichi. It looks to be another quality signing, although one which needed to be done after 2 seasons of instability from the keeper, rather than signalling a new direction for the club.
Quote: “I really appreciate being able to come back to Avispa at this time. I would like to use my experience to contribute to the team and make Avispa a force again. Thankyou, I’ll do my best to aim at promotion for the supporters and everyone.”
