Samir – A new number 9   Leave a comment

I had thought the reason the number 9 shirt had been left empty was to encourage all the strikers to fight for a first team spot, other thought it was because we were going to bring in a Brazilian a la Ramazotti last year.

Yesterday everyone else was proved right when we signed a Brazilian to play for us this season: Samir Lima de Araujo, or Samir for short.

He appears to be something of a journeyman striker rather than someone at the start of their career who may come good, being 30 years old and having drifted around 4 levels of Brazilian football and having a spell in China before Chinese football got really rich.

He claims to be quick, and have good technique, and will hopefully be experienced enough to be able to come right into the team and make a difference as an impact substitute.
I don’t think he is likely to play from the start as Yutaka is Captain and Sakata is our best player, but if he can come off the bench and score the winning goal in 5-6 games this season then he will have done his job.

I don’t really agree with him taking a spot on the bench as we have 2 young strikers in Ishizu and Yoshihara, and one coming back from injury in Nishida, who will now get fewer opportunities to get experience, but if he makes the difference between us getting promotion and staying down it will have been the right thing to do.

Various videos of him exist on youtube, and while it is impossible to judge anything from videos uploaded by agents it gives some idea of what sort of player he is.
The video suggests he may also be able to play on the right wing if he needs to.
